His music is an eclectic mix of folk music and popular songs, the latter variously in a crooning or in a schlager style. He is best known for his baritone singing voice and trademark whistling ability as well as his guitar skills. Whittaker although not having the chart style success of The Beatles or ABBA, attained a large audience following through his television appearances and live performances. He took to marketing via television advertorials after being dropped from his record label RCA Victor, with the influx of the rock era. Whittaker is best known internationally for his single The Last Farewell, released in 1971 which charted in 11 countries, having been rereleased in the US in 1975 it became his only record to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and arraying number 1 status on the Adult Contemporary chart. Whittaker was widely known for his own compositions including Durham Town (The Leavin') and "I Don't Believe in If Anymore" (1970). American audiences are most familiar with his 1970 hit album "New World in the Morning. From the 1970s onward he had his greatest successes and fan base in Germany singing in German.
