John Hancorn has had a successful singing career in the world of Opera, Oratorio, recital and consort work. He has now established a firm reputation as a choral director and vocal animateur. As an operatic baritone he has appeared in principal roles at Glyndebourne, ENO, the Royal Opera House and Welsh National Opera and sang Christus in the Bach Passions with Sir Peter Pears. As a soloist he has performed with the BBC Singers, Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the English Concert. He is music director of the Brighton Early Music Festival Singers, East Sussex Bach Choir, the Baroque Collective Singers and Eastbourne Choral Society and co-director of The Baroque Collective. He directed staged performances of Purcell The Fairy Queen in 2011 and conducted Bach St John Passion in 2013 for Brighton Early Music Festival. He has directed the Orlando Consort in Tarik O’Regan Scattered Rhymes, and world premieres of Orlando Gough’s opera, The Finnish Prisoner and community cantata Dead Head. He directed a choir of young professional singers for a critically acclaimed recording of Ed Hughes’s Buried Flame, released by Divine Art in 2012. John regularly leads vocal workshops and masterclasses, and teaches at Trinity College of Music, Christ’s Hospital and Lancing College. He has directed chamber choir courses at Dartington for many years and is a tutor at AIMS Summer School.
