He made his first appearance on stage in 1937 at Empire Theatre, Leeds, and appeared at the London Coliseum two years later. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Artillery. His brother, Roy, became a performer with the Southern Army Entertainments and returned to England to join the 'Stars in Battle-dress' show. He requested Peter be released from the Army to join him. He was one of the Three Barbour Brothers, famed for their stilt-walking and dancing - their forte was tap-dancing on stilts on a staircase. The three brothers were the original members, however, Geoffrey did not enjoy performing, and was replaced by Jean, Peter's wife. Their daughter later took over the act.
