He studied at the Royal College of Music and was awarded the Chopin Sonata Prize and the Tagore Gold Medal as the outstanding musician of his year. His career was launched when his duo partnership with Chilingirian won the BBC Beethoven duo competition in 1969, and an international competition in Munich in 1971.
