He studied organ at Durham Cathedral and went on study music at the University College of the South West and the Royal Academy of Music. Between 1915-1917, he was the organist of the United Methodist Church in Crook, going on to become the organist and choirmaster of the H.M. Chapel Royal of Hampton Court Palace.
