Born in New York City, Magee studied music at Westminster Choir College and Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University Bloomington where her teacher was the American soprano Margaret Harshaw.In 1995, Magee made her operatic debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, singing the role of Fiordiligi in Mozart's Così fan tutte; her international debut came in 1996 at the Berlin State Opera, under the direction of Daniel Barenboim.

In 1998, she sang the role of Elsa in a recording of Wagner's Lohengrin opposite Peter Seiffert and Daniel Barenboim conducting. The next year, she recorded Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg as Eva with the same conductor. In 2005, she recorded the role of Ellen Orford in Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes with Franz Welser-Möst conducting. In 2008, she recorded Dvorák's Rusalka with the same conductor.
