People Open DS/UK/20946 Vula Viel (fl 2015-) Vula Viel fl 2015- Group (Mixed) British Ghanian inspired music group Bex Burch's new band, Vula Viel (meaning 'good is good' in Dagaare), brings together London musicians including Jim Hart, Dan Nicholls, Tom Challenger, George Crowley, Dave Smith, Simon Roth, Dave De Rose and Stephen Burke. The group's energetic music is inspired by the three years that Bex spent living in Dagaare, where she played music with the Dagaare tribe of upper-west Ghana. Based around the gyil (a Dagaare xylophone made of sacred lliga wood and gourd resonators), Vula Viel blend ancient music from Ghana with western sounds. Bass keys and two drummers hold down and thrash out the nucleus of rhythm, while the wailing sax on top is pure Dagaare.
