Its partnership with the historic opera house’s Music Director Riccardo Chailly, famed for his own towering musical personality and vital music-making, summons performances of astonishing potency and subtlety. Together, they look to Eastern Europe and beyond for the first of two concerts. They are joined by violinist and violist Julian Rachlin for the elegance and dancing rhythms of Bartók’s Viola Concerto, before Shostakovich’s remarkable Twelfth Symphony.
