Joseph Weingarten (1911-1996) was born in Budapest and studied at the Franz Liszt Academy with Kodaly, Weiner and Dohnanyi. He moved to Britain in 1934 and launched a major pianoforte career, performing concerto, solo and chamber music. He later taught at Birmingham Conservatoire, to whom he bequeathed funds to enable student exchanges between Birmingham and Budapest. To honour the centenary of his birth, we assemble professors from Budapest, former students, former Weingarten scholars and the Chamber Choir in a gala programme, costing only £1, our intention being to bring the spirit of Budapest to Birmingham and fill the ABH with goodwill, great music and festive celebration.
