She learnt cello with Valentina Orde as a youth. She went on to study with Julois Klengel at Leipzig Conservatoire and Diran Alexanian in Paris.

She made her London debut decital at Wigmore Hall in 1930 and continued playing a number of solo engagements. At a 1930s Proms, she deputised at the last moment for Thelma Reiss. In 1937, Butler, violinist Marjorie Hayward and pianist Kathleen Markwell formed a trio, the Kamaran.

At a Prom in August 1940, she played with the violinst Arthur Caterall. Halfway through the evening, the air-raid siren sounded and no one could leave the Hall. The concert continued throughout the night. </OtherInfo>
