The English bass, Richard Standen, studied at the Guildhall School of Music. Standen made his debut at the Royal Albert Hall with the Bach Choir in 1949. He sang at all main Music Festivals in Britain and with many leading Choral Societies. He participated in BBC Prom Concerts and broadcasts frequently in choral works and recitals on television and radio. Engagements abroad included Holland, Belgium, Austria, Contemporary Festival of Music Cologne in 1958; Händel Festival Barcelona in 1959; and the Haydn Festival Madrid in 1959.
