O'Farrell was educated at a convent in Hampstead and was later an active member of the Catholic Stage Guild. She worked for the BBC's Religious Department, and read the Epilogue.

O'Farrell trained at Rosina Filippi's dramatic school, and played her first star part as Peg in "Peg o' My Heart" at the Globe Theatre, London, with A. E. Matthews. Later she appeared with Sir Aubrey Smith in a revival of "The Liars" at St. James's Theatre, playing Lady Jessica. Her first broadcast was from His Majesty's Theatre in 1923, playing Bridget Cromwell, with Henry Ainley as Oliver Cromwell. She joined the BBC Repertory Company in 1939 but left to join the cast of ITMA, in which she played various comedy parts for two years.</OtherInfo>
